I love to travel, whether for business or personal reasons. I love meeting people and connecting, hearing their stories, trying new food, and experiencing different cultures.
Last week, I had the opportunity to talk to an Uber driver, who was a Special Forces veteran. He retired after 30 years. I also learned how hard it was for him to return to the civilian world and the counseling he had to have. Here he was in his 'past life,' full of power and responsibility, with top-secret clearance—to now, coaching his kids in football and driving them around as an 'average Joe.' Imagine how hard that would be! He loves driving for Uber because it gives him some personal connection.
Last night, I talked to a driver that used to be a banker. Talk about a rough job when 90% of your phone calls go to voicemail, and no one wants to talk to you! So now, he is driving for Uber and Lyft - and working with his brother at his newly started restaurant. He told me that 200 days a year, his culture fasts, and he doesn't eat meat, dairy, or eggs. He said they also eat a lot of raw meat. "Ugh, not for me," I told him!!! The plus to this conversation is that I now have a new Ethiopian restaurant in Seattle to try!!! I'll pass on the raw meat :-)
What could you learn from people if you were present? What could you learn from employees if you really heard them? What could you learn about YOURSELF if you were present? What could you create if you listened and engaged?
Connections and conversations! Let's connect and see how we can create some magic in the world!
