Why would you want to CHANGE someone?
I just recollected a conversation I had with a business owner of one of the manufacturing companies that my business my represents. This person asked me about the Life Coaching I just became certified in. They then started talking about an employee and some struggles and challenges. They were collaborating with me on potential ways that they could change this employee, using statements like, "If we could just get them to be more XYZ.....". My response was, "That person has had that thinking for decades. YOU aren't going to change them. They have to want that for themselves."
Another recent conversation with a Supply Chain Manager, talking about how one of their employees was 'too much of an Empath', and absorbed everyone else's stuff. "If only they could be XYZ.....". This employee has gifts that the manager doesn't see. And, the individual feels like they aren't performing well for that reason.
Build it and they will come (stay!)
My take on both of these conversations is that WE ALL HAVE OUR UNIQUE GIFTS. We, as leaders, cannot change someone, just like we cannot change someone in a relationship. The greatest change that people can make, is the change within yourself. When you feel confident in yourself and your abilities, the community (business) surrounding you does too! When you show your compassion and caring in your world, your team starts to feel safe to do that. They grow that within your organization and suddenly you have built an environment where people WANT to work, and feel like they are part of something bigger than just themselves.
