I am still learning, every-darn-day.
Opportunities keep showing up, giving me the lesson again and again on how to practice not giving my power away to things outside of me and to things that I cannot control. Every time I have a work or life situation that ‘happens,’ I get to practice working on my boundaries. I get to practice empathy and staying in my personal power. I can't control what happens, only the way I choose to respond to the event/situation/thing/person.
However, there are things that I feel I have a bit more control over, such as ending the work day on time, closing down the laptop at 5:15pm and getting out in nature. The trees and fresh air are calling to me! All the work can wait until tomorrow.
The weather is perfect for another walk in the trees! Enjoying nature makes me truly happy. Connecting with nature is a piece of my “SQ.”
What is SQ, or Spiritual Quotient?
- Connection to a higher power: This could be a deity, a universal force, or a personal sense of spirituality.
- Meaning and purpose: Understanding one's place in the world and having a sense of purpose.
- Wisdom and compassion: Applying spiritual knowledge to everyday life with empathy and kindness.
- Inner peace and tranquility: Cultivating a sense of calm and balance.
While there is no universally accepted measure of SQ it's often considered alongside other forms of intelligence, such as IQ (Intelligence Quotient), EQ (Emotional Quotient), and AQ (Adaptability Quotient).
It can be developed through practices like:
- Meditation
- Prayer
- Mindfulness
- Studying spiritual texts
- Volunteering
- Connecting to Nature
Really, SQ is about living a life aligned with one's values and beliefs, fostering a sense of connection, and finding meaning in life's experiences.
SQ and AQ were parts of myself I needed to learn. I was already pretty good with IQ and EQ. Spiritual Quotient brought balance into my life after 30 years of being a self-proclaimed workaholic. I wasn’t a happy person working all the time, but I thought I was. I have all my stuff together, so it seemed from the outside. But, failed relationships and health challenges were signs that life wasn't working for me. I thought that was life, working hard and achieving.
We all need balance. IQ and EQ have been discussed for years and are important, but AQ, and especially SQ create the balance we need to be successful, happy, and to live a purpose-filled life.
Do you want to create that balance in your life? Have you worked too hard, for too long, trying to find your value outside of yourself? Are you ready to find meaning in life's experiences?
